A couple of former Stetson Hatter baseball players recently got the call to report to their parent club from their farm-club teams for the final rundown of the 2009 season.
Southpaw Lenny DiNardo, no stranger to the big leagues, had been pitching for the AAA Kansas City Royals farm in Omaha. He had compiled a 10-5 record, with a solid 3.32 earned-run average. At this writing, it looked as though he might get his first start for the Royals on Thursday night against the Detroit Tigers.
Infielder Chris Johnson got the call from the Houston Astros while playing for AAA Round Rock. He had early season injury problems, but still played in 104 games, batting .281, with 13 home runs, 20 doubles and 42 runs batted-in.
Johnson got a rude welcome to the biggies, as he was beaned in the batting cage during a practice session. He apparently was injured. He also got to see some early action the following night against the Atlanta Braves, when the Astros third baseman injured his leg and was taken to the hospital. Johnson failed to get a hit in his two trips to the plate.
Just a note on Stetson Hatter men’s basketball, where Head Coach Derek Waugh announced Coach Chris Capko has joined the program as an assistant to replace Coach Jon Coffman, who resigned earlier to take a similar post at Colgate University in New York. Capko comes to DeLand from Marshall University, where he was a graduate assistant.
