Talking it over — DeLand High School Bulldog football coaches talk things over with their gridders during the Fall Football Classic at Ponte Vedra Beach, where they blanked the Allen Nease gridders, 17-0, in two quarters of play. Probably similar scenes were seen here Friday night, as the ’Dogs hosted the Wekiva Mustangs.

It is always a little tough writing this time of the year for the Monday editions, as our deadline is just before our Friday-night high-school football games, and we have to look ahead to upcoming contests.
Friday night, our six area high-school football teams were slated to get their 2009 seasons off the ground. As was noted earlier, the DeLand Bulldogs, the Deltona Trinity Eagles and the Lighthouse Crusaders were ticketed to open at home. That leaves the Taylor Wildcats, the Pine Ridge Panthers and the Deltona Wolves hitting the road.
Oddly enough, this Friday night will find a similar pattern for our area gridders — the same three at home, and the other trio on the road.
The Bulldogs return to Spec Martin Memorial Stadium at 7 p.m. to tangle with the Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs, the Deltona Trinity Eagles will be lining up against the Calvary Christian Lions, and the Lighthouse Crusaders will have Agape Christian as their opponent.
It will be back on the road to Orlando for the Deltona Wolves, as this time they’ll be facing Orlando Colonial. The Taylor Wildcats will be heading west to tangle with Umatilla, while Pine Ridge will be going east to take on the Warner Christian gridders.
This writer has heard from three of the schools regarding their junior-varsity football schedule.
The DeLand Bullpups were slated to open at home Thursday night, hosting the Daytona Beach Mainland JVs, and this week, the ’Pups have an open date.
The Taylor JVs had a date that wasn’t filled the last time we heard, but they may have come up with something. Thursday, the THS team is to host the Umatilla JVs on Swanson Field at 5:30 p.m.
Thursday night, the Deltona JVs were listed as hosting the Atlantic JVs, and this Thursday, they will be facing the Spruce Creek JVs at 6 p.m., probably at the New Smyrna Beach Airport Complex, but check this out.
