Here are some recent area sports in brief.
* * * * *
The Stetson University men's soccer team officially opened its 2009 season at home with a 1-0 win over the Northwood University Seahawks from West Palm Beach.
Matt Hoskins of Marietta, Ga., netted the game's lone goal, with Capt. Robert Hodge credited with the assist. Logan Potter recorded the shutout in the nets with four saves.
The Hats will be idle until Sept. 11, when they play at Florida International University, and then they face Florida Atlantic on the 13th. The next home action will be Sept. 18 and 20, as the Hats host Hofstra, Jacksonville and St. Joseph's in the Stetson Invitational tournament.

Matt Goerke of Lake Helen captured his first victory in the 450 Class Motocross at Southwick, Mass. He has replaced the injured Josh Hill.
This weekend, the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championships will be staged at the American Motocross Festival at the Steel City Raceway in Delmont, Pa.

Regular-season football action opens Friday for our six West Volusia high-school teams, with three at home, and the others on the road.
The DeLand Bulldogs will be in Spec Martin Memorial Stadium at 7 p.m., hosting the Wekiva Mustangs. The Deltona Trinity Christian Eagles will be hosting the Atlantic Sharks, and the Lighthouse Christian Crusaders will be at the Sperling Sports Complex taking on the Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy.
The Taylor Wildcats will be facing Calvary Christian at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex, the Deltona Wolves will be playing in the Orlando Citrus Bowl paired with the Orlando Jones gridders, and the Pine Ridge Panthers tangle with the New Smyrna Beach Barracudas at the NSB Airport Complex.

The talented DeLand Lady Bulldog volleyballers opened their season sweeping the Deltona Lady Wolves 25-13, 25-12 and 25-16.
Junior Shellie Robinson recorded 11 kills, and six aces. Senior Olivia Van Deusen posted 28 assists, and had three aces. Sophomore Lauren Apetz had nine kills, and added six aces.

Back to the football scene.
With DeLandite Tra Thomas now playing for the Jacksonville Jaguars, more folks have shown an interest in attending some of the home games.
The Jags will be home Sept. 20 against Arizona. In October, it will be Tennessee on the fourth and St. Louis on the 11th. November will find Kansas City in Jax on the eighth, and Buffalo on the 22nd.
December will be busy with Houston in town on the sixth. Miami follows on the 13th, plus the home finale with Indianapolis on the 17th.
All games will be at 1 p.m., with the exception of the last one, which lists the kickoff at 8:20 p.m.
