The DeLand Suns are now taking aim at the Florida Collegiate Summer League (wooden bats) crown, which will be decided at 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3, at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg.
The Suns compiled a 24-11 record to capture the regular-season championship here on their home field — Melching Field at Conrad Park.
Manager Davey Johnson of the Suns will have his team face their initial play-off test here at 7 p.m. Thursday. The Suns will be matched with Wednesday night's play-in winner between the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs, and the Clermont Mavericks, whose Wednesday-night game begins at 7 p.m.
The Suns' game against either Winter Park or Clermont will be one of the two best-of-three games Thursday, as the Leesburg Lightning will be hosted by the Sanford River Rats at 7 p.m.
The special series continues Friday evening with the possibility the two teams heading to St. Petersburg for the title game will be decided. The Suns will be at either Winter Park or Clermont, while Sanford visits Leesburg — both games set for 7 p.m.
The best-of-three series continues Saturday, if necessary, with the Winter Park/Clermont victor due to face the Suns here on Melching Field at Conrad Park at 7 p.m. The other game would be Leesburg at Sanford.
All depends on the Thursday-night and Friday-night results to see if two or one or no games will be needed Saturday.
