Here’s hoping our baseball fans are reading this early enough, or remember our last publication, where it was noted the DeLand Suns and the Leesburg Lightning will be playing here at 7 p.m. Tuesday with the Bright House Sports Network on hand for all of the Florida Collegiate Summer League (wooden bat) action on Melching Field at Conrad Park.
At this writing, the league-leading Suns were 16-4, and the third-place Lightning stood 8-9. Davey Johnson leads the Suns and Frank Viola the Lightning. The gates open at 5:45 p.m. when the two noted above, along with the players, will have an autograph session at 6:30 p.m.
The first 200 fans to present a special flier that has been available at the earlier games and around Downtown will receive an official game ball. There will be free barbecue courtesy of Brian’s Bar-B-Q to the first 1,500 with game tickets, and it will be served after five innings.
Should be a big night, but if you are unable to attend, follow the Suns that night on Channel 47.
Because of the holiday weekend, the deadline for this edition was moved up a day, which means the Thursday-night game here with the Sanford River Rats was unavailable. The Suns had their Tuesday-night game at Clermont washed out, and they were idle Wednesday.
At this writing, the FCSL standings were DeLand 16-4, Sanford 12-9, Leesburg 8-9, Clermont 7-12 and Winter Park 4-13.
Looking ahead to upcoming games for the Suns: tonight, Monday, July 6, 7 o’clock hosting Sanford; Tuesday, 7 p.m. the Bright House Sports Network game; Thursday, Clermont here 7 p.m.; Friday, Winter Park here 7 p.m.; July 12, Leesburg here; and July 13, Clermont here.
The All-Star Game is ticketed for 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, at Sanford Municipal Stadium. The Suns have eight regular-season games scheduled after the All-Star Game, the playoffs play-in game and, then, the best-of-three playoff series, with the championship set for Tropicana Park, home of the Tampa Rays, Aug. 3.
