Residents looking westward from DeLand June 24 probably noticed a huge column of smoke rising against the horizon. The smoke came from a controlled burn on 270 acres in the Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge, according to the Volusia County Fire Services.
Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge, 2045 Mud Lake Road, in DeLeon Springs, provides a home to more than 215 species of birds. Founded in 1964, the refuge is 21,574 acres of freshwater marshes.
