Here’s a brief rundown on some of the players with area connections playing in the professional ranks.
Recently in intraleague action for the major leagues, Atlanta’s Chipper Jones and Baltimore’s Luke Scott faced each other in a series.
These figures are for the players going into Thursday’s action.
• Chipper was batting .309 in 55 games, with 58 hits that included eight home runs, a triple, and 10 doubles.
• Luke held a .307 average in 48 games while belting 14 homers and seven doubles.
• Justin Bass, in the Florida Marlins’ farm club with the Greensboro Grasshoppers, Class A, recently was named South Atlantic League Player of the Week, hitting a five-home-run spree. His batting average has slipped to .274 in 46 games with 43 hits, including 11 homers, a triple and five doubles.
• Brian Bocock has been in two leagues for the San Francisco Giants. In Class A San Jose, in 36 games, he had 33 hits with two home runs, a triple and nine doubles, with a .219 average. In Class AA for the Connecticut Defenders, he held a .171 average in 25 games with 12 hits, including a double.
• Also in a Giants’ farm club at Class A San Jose, Shane Jordon was hitting .159 in 30 games, with two triples and a double among 14 hits.
• Chris Johnson in the Houston organization is coming back from an injury with four games at Class A Lancaster before moving to the Class AAA Round Rock Express, where he’s hitting .283 in 32 games with 34 hits, including a homer, two triples and six doubles.
It is difficult to know whether some players have been slowed with injuries, because some figures seem rather low for this point in the season.
• Nathan Nery, in the Baltimore organization with the Class A Delmarva Shorebirds, is 3-0 with a 1.17 earned-run average during 23 innings of work, with seven walks and 19 strikeouts.
• Lenny DiNardo is at Class AAA with the Omaha Royals in the Kansas City organization. He has a 4-3 record, with a 3.62 ERA, and a solid walk/strikeout ratio of 14/56.
• Gary Glover, with the Washington AAA club at Syracuse, is 2-3, with a 6.32 ERA, with nine strikeouts, and three bases on balls.
• Emary Frederick, of the St. Lucie Mets of the Florida State League, recently pitched in Daytona Beach against the Cubs in Class A play. He’s 2-4 with a 3.45 ERA in 28.2 innings, while fanning 21 and walking 14.
• Pitcher of the Week recently was earned by Corey Kluber of the Class A Lake Elsinore Storm of the California League — a farm club of the San Diego Padres. He’s 5-6, with a 4.19 ERA, while ringing up 93 batters on strikes, and walking 27.
• Michael Main is with the Texas franchise at Class A Bakersfield, holding a 4-6 record with the Blaze. In 54 innings, he has a 7.33 ERA with 45 strikeouts and 36 walks.
• Nick Regilio is with the AAA Toledo Mud Hens of the Detroit Tigers organization, with a 0-1 record and a 3.60 ERA in 15 innings, with 11 strikeouts and 13 bases on balls.
