After having Wednesday’s schedule washed out for the Atlantic Sun Conference Baseball Tournament here on Melching Field at Conrad Park, a number of changes were made, changing the two games to a single-elimination format with different pairings.
In the first game, the Belmont Bruins rallied for three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, and then they held off the Mercer Bears in the ninth for a 6-5 triumph.
Four games were planned for Friday, and back to a double-elimination format, unless there was more rain, and then it would be single. The tournament was scheduled to close out Saturday, with the possibility of a game Sunday.
The Jacksonville Dolphins, No. 1 seed, and the second-seeded Lipscomb Bisons, were awarded first-round byes.
Belmont took an early, 2-0, lead, but the Bears tied it at 2-2 going into the sixth. Both teams scored once in the seventh. The Bears tallied a run in the eighth, before the Bruins broke loose, and another Mercer run in the ninth wasn’t quite enough.
The Bruins (29-28) continued on, while the Bears (23-23) closed out. Daniel Wagner led the victors with three singles, while Dylan Crain and Derek Wiley each doubled and singled. For the Bears, it was Billy Burns with a double and a pair of singles, while Jacob Tanis had a trio of one-baggers.
Jon Ivie (3-3) picked up the win in relief, while Jimmy Stanley posted his eighth save. Dan April (3-5) took the loss.
