Sidewalk confrontation — A man identified by DeLand Police as Justin Grant Eiland, right, points to street preachers from Bible Baptist Church as the men gather at Pioneer Park in Downtown DeLand May 9. After one of the preachers signed a complaint, police charged Eiland with disorderly conduct and simple battery.

Confrontations between street preachers and others in Downtown DeLand have been going on for about a year-and-a-half.
Recently, those encounters have been a topic of concern at DeLand City Commission meetings. Scott Price, who owns a building at the corner of Woodland Boulevard and Rich Avenue, told commissioners he has been concerned that tensions between bar patrons and preachers could become violent.
Now, a confrontation just after midnight May 9 has resulted in charges filed against a DeLand man.
Street preacher Jayson Hill, a member of Bible Baptist Church in Glenwood, signed a charging affidavit May 12 alleging he had been threatened and grabbed by 37-year-old Justin Grant Eiland of DeLand.
Hill said Eiland shook his shoulders and shoved him while shouting obscenities at him and others in his church group.
Beacon photographer Marsha McLaughlin happened to be on the scene, and captured photographs and video of the encounter. The video, which The Beacon provided at the request of the Police Department, was instrumental in helping DeLand Police identify the suspect, Deputy Police Chief Randy Henderson said.
On Wednesday, May 13, the charging affidavit was already in the hands of the State Attorney’s Office.
Henderson expected the State Attorney’s Office to issue a court summons, a “paper warrant,” to Eiland pretty quickly. It will instruct Eiland when and where to report before the judge. If Eiland should not show up, a warrant for his arrest would then be issued.
These kinds of misdemeanor charges are relatively common, Henderson said, and the State Attorney’s Office usually handles them pretty quickly.
Here’s what the tape, available on The Beacon Web site www.beacononlinenews.com, shows:
The suspect, whom police later identified as Eiland, moves up and down the sidewalk in front of 145 N. Woodland Blvd., near Half-Time Sports Bar, among the street preachers. He calls the preachers “idiots” and other choice words. The suspect sometimes swings his arms, as he gestures toward them.
The suspect jabs his finger toward one man, and says, “Did you think you were a badass before you got saved? ... I’m the baddest [expletive] to come off the planet.”
One of the preachers, holding a sign with the message “Christ died for your sins,” turns toward the suspect, holding the sign almost like a shield, then turns back toward the street, proclaiming, “The Bible says you must be born again ...”
The suspect grabs the preacher by the shoulders, from behind. He jostles the street preacher, then shoves him away.
“Hey, shut your [expletive] face,” the suspect says.
Someone tells the suspect to relax.
One person gets on his cell phone, apparently, to call the police.
“Go ahead, call ’em,” the suspect says. “I ain’t done nothing ... I can guarantee you one thing, nobody saw it, except for you and the creep calling.”
“Except the lady got it on video,” a person is heard to say.
The suspect then says that’s OK, “Bring it on. I’ll go to jail.”
Hearing the concerns of Price and others about the strong emotions that often arise during encounters with the street preachers, the DeLand City Commission had asked City Manager Michael Pleus to investigate what could be done to calm the situation.
The Beacon was unable to contact Eiland or Hill for comment. Nor had Hill’s pastor, James Knox, returned calls at press time.
The Beacon first documented interactions of street preachers and Downtowners in a news story titled “Religion: taking it to the streets,” published in January 2008.
Pastor James Knox of Bible Baptist Church has said the street preachers from his church preach only on public property, such as sidewalks, which is legal.
They are careful to respect the law, staying on public sidewalks. They do not try to shut down businesses, Knox said.
Knox also has pointed out Bible Baptist is not the only church whose members preach on Downtown DeLand streets.
Bar owners have accused the preachers of accosting patrons with signs and literature, and screaming at them.

This was written about 2,600 years ago, God's command to this prophet to write the message down, easy to read, so that the passer-by can read it, even if he is running. The message was written on tables of stone, so the runner who is reading them certainly was NOT carrying the tablets. He was reading the tablets as he ran past.
HABAKKUK 2:2 And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.
I want to grab all the men and women for a moment, who profess to be bible believing Christians.
Look at the times we live in, this comment list is the perfect example of the vast majority of our countries thoughts, towards the bible that molded this nation. Brethren we as Christians may have to face persecution again... I want to exhort you to realize the times we're living in and to not go along with this worlds distractions. Please brethren realize the seriousness of our faith and our calling to stand firm on the Rock, which is Christ, and to fight the fight of faith as so many that have gone before.
Your Brother,
A man walks out of a bar onto the sidewalk, sees someone he knows across the street and calls his friend to join him for a drink... nobody complains. A man comes from a church and stands on the sidewalk calling men to join them in a drink of the living water... you see the reaction.
A sign is placed on the sidewalk advertising some drink, club, band, etc... Far from causing a stir, it generates business. A man stands on the street holding a sign that advertises Jesus Christ, salvation from sin, eternal life, etc... the man is assaulted.
A man stands on the sidewalk handing out coupons for drinks at a certain bar... They are enthusiastically received by many, who then use them to get half off their evening of pleasure. A man stands on the sidewalk handing out tracts telling of salvation FREELY offered... Men Slander and criticize him for being too proactive.
Now, you tell me, is the problem here with the method? Or is it the message?
On one hand you have reasonable rational people who can understand the logic of a well stated arguement.
On the other you have a group of people who's world view is based upon a two thousand year old collection of random fairy tales that they purport as fact.
It will always be impossible to reconcile these two points of view until we get to a point as a society where everyone can take a step back from their indoctrinations and be honest with themselves and each other.
No doubt, this young man was drunk and crossed the line. But what can be expected to happen when night after night, a group of zealots stand a few feet from your dinner table and scream out their incoherent ramblings? They care not if you are reuniting with old friends, visiting with a relative from out of town, or just relaxing after a hard days work. I think as a courtesy "people of god" should return the favor of allowing the sinners quiet enjoyment of there free time, seeing as we give them tax free status to preach their fear doctrine to the next generation of unfortunates each Sunday.
It is amusing to consider how these street preachers would react to an equal lack of respect if it occured outside their place of "worship." I would like to see how long it took before violence was initiated by one of their "faithful" if there was a bikini car-wash across the street from their church on Glenwood Road next Sunday morning!
There is one positive to all of this, these street preachers are the best deterrent to organized religion than any athiest could ever hope to be. I hope they continue to preach night after night until there is no doubt left as to their insanity. I really don't think they realize how much harm they do to their own cause....
And if I'm causing no harm, it shouldn't bother you" -Ben Harper. We dont bother them at church, so dont bothers us at the bars! were causing no harm to you!
On the other hand, these groups believe they’re trying to save us from an eternity in the great microwave, and that it’s their duty to use every method possible to prevent that from happening. If this is true, they should be pro-abortion, because that’s the only way, according to this worldview, to guarantee that a soul has a definite entrée into heaven. Would you want to risk having your kid make the wrong decision after his birth?
1. Many of the comments here are clearly a case of people seeing and hearing what they want to see or hear - not necessarily what actually happened. I can assure you that no one is preaching or pointing a sign specifically at you based on what you are doing, wearing, or driving. If you see it that way, it is only because a "connection" has been made between you and the other person - make of that what you will.
2. There is no such thing as a right to not be offended. The First Amendment was not written to protect nice polite speech - it was put there to protect that which some people find offensive, disagreeable, controversial and "politically incorrect".
3. The motivation behind public ministry (in addition to simply obeying a direct commandment of God) is the same as someone who sees people inside a burning building and then does everything he possibly can to save them from the fire. For those who believe The Holy Bible, the analogy fits perfectly. The motivation is a genuine love and concern for those who will, indeed, find themselves "in the fire" without salvation. If you choose to reject the message, then that is your choice. Just don't try to claim that the public ministry is done from any motivation other than a genuine love and concern for you. Sometimes important messages are annoying; you probably thought the same of your parents when they scolded you for doing something that you shouldn't.
4. The level of ignorance displayed about The Holy Bible in some comments is astounding. If you want to argue against public ministry because you find it annoying and offensive, that's fine; you can probably make a solid argument that way. Just don't try to use The Holy Bible to justify your position - you have no idea how foolish it makes you look. While public ministry may be standing on very shaky ground when it comes to being "socially acceptable" in this God-despising culture, it stands on rock-solid ground when it comes to what The Holy Bible says.
America - and Christianity - are all about making choices. Choose wisely.
What if this results in a tit for tat, eye for an eye sort of response and DeLand's drunks start picketing churches on Sunday morning?
Yikes!
Didn't Jesus drink wine?
Maybe the preachers should start packing tazers and mace. Perhaps a pistol in the pocket wouldn't be out of line either. I'm just saying...
I see what some has said in statements above that what is the church doing for Deland. They my friends are do more than you can ever know. I was part of the Shelter program from my local church and we provided food, bed, clothing, and even sent the sick to Doctors to be treated and all paid by the church. You dont see the city or county government helping them out.
I just want to say that ThomasG, and others saying it all about the rights. You are WRONG, Here are the rights:
"The First Amendment to the United States Constitution is the part of the United States Bill of Rights that expressly prohibits the United States Congress from making laws "respecting an establishment of religion" or that prohibit the free exercise of religion, infringe the freedom of speech, infringe the freedom of the press, limit the right to peaceably assemble, or limit the right to petition the government for a redress of grievances."
The admendment is aimed at Congress so they would not take away freedoms from the people and it protects our rights. Here is what it protects:
"The Establishment Clause of the First Amendment prohibits the establishment of a national religion by the Congress" So that Uncle Same cant force religion or no-religion on any peoples.
" Free exercise of religion - Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment" So that State powers cant tell what religions peoples should have.
"Freedom of speech"
Colleen in the Bible there are many who shouted from the streets. John the Baptist shouted against Herod about being a sinner. Jesus himself at the Temple smashed all the vendors selling goods there. Jesus preaches in the temple and was confronted by priests, Jesus shouted at them calling that place a "Harlot the home of the lizzard and the spider." Besause what waht the elders were doing there(taking money, and sinning, selling gods in the temple). So, I say read the Bible again there are more accounts of holy shoutting there.
Pita, Whats the deal with the ladies?
sandi & Jim and others - You have you freedom, if you dont like what you are hearing tell them I dont want to hear it and jsut simply walk away. That easy. Walk walk away.
Daniel - I surpose we all in Gods Service but you know there are some that might be to pushing on what they have to say. But I do agree with you about the Lord.
I take care of a friend with schizophrenia. The day he was released from the hospital, we were walking through downtown DeLand and were approached by some church people who wanted to give us "free hugs". My friend is very sensitive about strangers invading his space, and when we at first politely declined, they kept it up, saying "How about a handshake?" Finally, to get them to leave us alone, I had to explain that my friend was mentally disabled and had just been released from the hospital and that they were harassing us.
Whether it's people telling you you're going to **** or people approaching you to give you "free hugs" as a sales pitch for their church, the practice is becoming overly invasive.
A solution might be to set aside a public space off the sidewalk which could serve as a free speech alley, where only those interested in hearing the messages would have to interact with the people delivering them.
I am praying for these men that are not cowards and standing boldly for the cause of my Saviour JESUS CHRIST!!! JESUS says in THE HOLY BIBLE,... STAND!!
Oh Yeah.... JESUS CHRIST also said.
Jos 24:15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
By the way... I am not a preacher, I am just someone that has read my BIBLE and knows TRUTH
Well said. I have been in DeLand since 1978 and have never been accosted by the street preachers. Let's see...drunks or street preachers?...I choose street preachers; and the continuance of freedom of speech.
Now if Daniel Lebreux is right, then we all know about God and how swell of a guy this Jesus Christ is. Good for us. If these preachers need to preach to people, go and preach to the crack addicted souls in Deland. The mothers that lose their babies to the state because they can't get off the meth and pills. If they would do that, then they aren't going to be preaching on the corner of 44 and 17/92. I don't see these street preachers anywhere in Deland except on Main street. They aren't helping Deland prosper, or bringing more money to downtown. They are disrupting local business.
We have bar fights nearly every Friday and Saturday nights in downtown Deland. There have been shootings, stabbing, rapes, and even a murder since bars have been allowed to open. The Police have to forceably close the bars. I don't think that we need bars in downtown Deland as it does not make for a family friendly atmosphere. I wish that the City Fathers would try not to make Deland into Daytona West. If I want "Beach Street" activity I would go to Daytona. Keep Deland simple. Street preaching to shootings. I would rather have street preaching.
Sidenote to To Thomas G, God doesn't hate you for riding a motorcycle, there are plenty of Christian Motorcycle Clubs. Just one church out of 188 in Deland, so don't judge all the churches and christians by this particular church no more than I would say that anyone who rides a motorcycle is a "****'s Angel" (No pund intended).
The ideas set down by our country's founders are there to protect us. They weren't put there so the righteous could stand behind them. This great and powerful country wasn’t founded by the strong and powerful; and wasn’t by the rich and mighty. It was founded by the weak, the sick, and the tired. All the founders wanted was freedom. All I want is freedom. I want the freedom from having religion forced down my throat. I want the freedom to enjoy myself on a bright sunny day, without being condemned because someone doesn't approve of my choice of transportation, God knows I have earned that much. I don’t protest your church or enact laws to stop you from having a church. Don't protest me and tell me that I'm not good enough for God to love me for what I am, a man with faults, problems, and a desire to stand up for the broken and beaten. I am just a man, so give me back my sidewalks. Give me back my freedom.
I hate going downtown because of the "street" preachers. I hate all the yelling and the overall nastiness. I don't want to be told I'm going to **** as I walk by them, for all they know, I could belong to the same religion. They just yell at everyone that they're going to ****.
Overall, holding up a sign should be okay, but, they should have to wait for people to approach them if they are already holding up a sign. Yelling and stopping everyone who walks by and yelling at cars really needs to stop.
I don't mind discreet preaching that you can easily turn down without humiliation to either party, but, I take serious offense to what goes on down town all the time.
There was another elderly religioius lady downtown for a long time. She just sat there and waited for people to approach her. She didn't yell at you that you were going to ****.
Overall, much better approach.
The one approach doesn't scare me away from downtown Deland, the signs and yelling though make me pass up downtown Deland.
I say preach if that is your thing, but even doing gods work can be annoying to others sometimes. I think what really ticks off adults is that the theme is tired. The whole **** and damnation, fire and brimestone, it does not work in the twenty first century. It seems to me, they could convey their message using a less childlike appoach. Fear and intimidation are ideas that do not go over well with adults. Its actually quite sad when one thinks about this, thousands of years and nothing new to yell about.
One last thing, while the self emposed emmisaries of god are out doing the lords work, I wonder who is doing their ladies.
They both need medication.
I have never known a Church inviting riots in public, nor have ever I heard a Church to invite members of a church to act in such vial ways in act of terrorism. The Mission of the Church is to go out into the WORLD and TEACH about Jesus and it is JESUS's command to the follower to make "fishers of men" and make disciples. The Church is not a building it is the body of Christ we are part of him. So we cant be confind to a "Building" as it were.
It is true there are some religions that are made up and are headed up by a false prophet and we are warned by Jesus himself stating "be warned of the False prophetin the last days."
And again I have never attended a Church that favor torture. We brothers in Christ favor forgiveness, peace towards our fellow men. With this said, Peace be with you.
There are some people in this world who do not want to hear the TRUTH because in thier heart they know that they have commited sin against God and by ignoring it they sweep their gult under the carpet and hope that God did not see. The same is with the man named Eiland he does not want to hear truth so he attacks it.
Peace be with you.
