The City of DeLand currently has several openings for people who want to volunteer to help their community.
The city has several advisory committees and boards for specific interest areas. The members are citizen volunteers who explore issues and sometimes recommend action to the City Commission.
Five such boards currently have openings.
Those interested may pick up applications in the City Clerk's office at City Hall, 120 S. Florida Ave., between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday-Friday.
Printable applications and descriptions of the committees can also be found on the City of DeLand Web site, www.deland.org.
Appointments will be made by the City Commission.
• MPO Bicycle/Pedestrian Advisory Task Force
The MPO, or Metropolitan Planning Organization, makes recommendations countywide for spending money on transportation improvements. The Bicycle/Pedestrian Advisory Task Force is a subcommittee that studies transportation issues affecting pedestrians and bicycle-riders.
There is one opening.
• Citizens Budget Advisory Committee
This committee studies the City of DeLand budget and makes recommendations to the city staff and DeLand City Commission for cost-cutting and fiscal efficiency.
There is one mid-term opening. The appointee's term will expire Dec. 31, and the appointee could be eligible for reappointment to a full two-year term.
Applicants should have some familiarity with at least one of these fields: accounting, insurance, finance, process improvement, human resources, manufacturing, employment law, management, and purchasing or contracting.
• Firefighters' Retirement Committee
Five members are needed; two of them must live in the City of DeLand. The committee oversees the management of retirement funds for the city's firefighters.
• Senior Council
There is one opening for a two-year term on the Senior Council. The committee member appointed to this seat must live in a senior-living facility inside DeLand city limits. The Senior Council works on issues of concern to DeLand's older residents, and has created a newsletter for senior citizens as well as a directory of services available to seniors.
• Airport Advisory Committee
There are two seats open on this committee, which studies management and operations at the DeLand Municipal Airport and makes recommendations to the City Commission.
Each member of this committee represents a certain interest group. The current openings are for a representative of a flight-training school, and a resident interested in noise abatement.
Terms are for two years.
