DeLand cancels fluoride, then adds it back

Dentists argue saving money by hurting teeth doesn't pay

A contingent of dentists and public-health professionals has convinced the DeLand City Commission it wasn't a good idea to save money by canceling fluoridation of city water.

Two months ago, to balance the water-department budget, DeLand officials stopped adding fluoride to city water. They stopped buying the chemical, and didn't replace the laboratory technician who did 20 daily tests required for fluoridation.

Those steps would have saved DeLand about $33,000 for the remainder of this fiscal year, and almost $80,000 next year.

But the dentists and others who spoke at the May 4 City Commission meeting said the cost to residents would be even higher, in terms of dental bills and health problems associated with tooth problems.

Most leading health professionals believe fluoride strengthens teeth and prevents tooth decay. The practice of water fluoridation has the endorsement of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Florida Department of Health, for example.

Others, however, especially some practitioners of alternative health care, note fluoride is a toxic chemical, and disagree with the practice of adding it to public water supplies.

DeLand is the only city in West Volusia that fluoridates its water. The decision to do so was made in 1995 after months of energetic debate between fluoride proponents and detractors.

Finally, the city conducted a straw poll by including surveys in water bills, and a majority of respondents endorsed fluoridation. After seeing those results, the City Commission authorized the expenditures necessary to get the program up and running.

Then came the economic contraction of the past year or so. DeLand is having trouble balancing its water-department budget because of two factors: one, a new pricing structure designed to encourage conservation; and, two, reduced sales of water and sewer services.

The city is selling less water and sewer services, Public Services Director Keith Riger said, because many houses are empty and in foreclosure and, also, because residents, in general, are conserving to save money.

In his report to the City Commission, Utilities Director Jim Ailes said it would be very challenging to restart fluoridation.

"Please note that I just recently had to find, with the help of Finance, a large sum of money to balance the shortfall projected in the budget. The proposed budget is in bad shape, also, and this money will be hard to find," Ailes wrote.

City Manager Michael Pleus suggested the City Commission not reinstate fluoridation until a study of the city's water and sewer rates can be completed. The study will probably recommend higher prices, but they would not be put into effect until the beginning of 2010, Pleus said.

Pleus said he approves of fluoridation, and was simply trying to balance income with expenses when he suggested the program be canceled.

"I looked at this program as one that was not necessarily, absolutely, mission-critical," the manager told commissioners.

The dentists disagreed.

Dentists, orthodontists, nurses, hygienists and even former state Rep. Joyce Cusack, a retired public-health nurse, showed up in force to argue that fluoride is mission-critical for the citizenry's health.

They showed a horrifying photo of a young woman's mouth full of caries, and threatened that people can die from poor dental health. They said DeLand had showed leadership and was making dental-health progress, but was in danger of backsliding if fluoridation wasn't restored.

"Let's cut this budget where we have to cut it, but let's not cut it on the backs of children and their dental hygiene," Cusack urged commissioners.

The five commissioners were unanimous in their surrender. They asked City Manager Pleus to bring back a plan for restoring the fluoride program.

Mayor Bob Apgar, however, told the dentists their job isn't finished.

In about five years, Apgar pointed out, plans call for the water systems of West Volusia's cities to be interconnected, as Central Florida struggles to find ways to supply a growing populace with water.

If DeLand is the only city adding fluoride to its water, that could be a problem when the city's water is mixed with other cities' supplies, Apgar noted.

"I think it's incumbent on the dental community to be talking to all of West Volusia," Apgar said.

Thank You Dr. Herring as it is always good to have someone with a local practice give some insites into the risks of unregulated doses of any cumulative toxic substance. Dentists by regulation and training are not qualified to speak To that issue of toxic risks outside the oral cavity documented for well over a dozen diseases in the 507 pages of the NRC report.

For some strange reason many do claim total safety at 1ppm in any quanity with any risk factors and with even other large intakes.

Most dental researchers have admitted small children swallow so much toothpaste that that alone can cause ugly dental fluorisis which lasts for a lifetime of ugly. Big money over a life time can cover it up with often 5 redos required over a lifetime. Mega bucks. The CDC had documented blacks have double this ugly moderate and severe damage but still refuses to tell the public just like the dentists who spoke to Deland. Memory issues maybe? The CDC had ethics charges filed in 2007 and still refuses to tell any including blacks and for kidney damage also which blacks have double of whites. Thwe US has 30 million with CKD and half do not know they have this kidney disease and should monitor and limit fluoride. Rat studies showed complete destruction of kidneys and alzheimer's like brain damage actually killing 80% of the rats in one year with all brain and kiney damaged. That was by Varner 1998 and repeated twice with same results all three times at 1ppm fluoride. Rats like cockroaches usually take mouch more of any tocin to kill then humans. The H2SiF6 which is cheap being crude toxic waste is much more toxic then the natural calcium fluoride the health department claimed is exactly the same.It takes 25 times more natural calcium fluoride to kill rats on a LD50 scale the the never tested by any agency H2SiF6. Did some one lie as this is standard rat killing data.

Often when different toxins are combined often they have a many times greater toxic effect then either alone. This has never been tested for for fluoridation. The main source of lead in most cities water is H2SiF6 as it is fantastic at leaching lead from brass, solder even when it is called lead free as some has 8% lead anyway but the old stuff in meters often 30% lead. At 1ppm the disinfectants make fluoridation much more destructive requiring expensive chemicals to control corrosion. In Washington Dc they had lead hundreds and thousands of times over the 15ppb limit and hid it from the public for almost 3 years. 2000-2004 were years of fraud and deception for Washington then massive cover up as only the federal agencies can do.Cover up is what they excell at..Marc Edwards of Virginia Tech documented this fraud and believes nationally it just might destroy tens of billions of corrosion damage to pipes and resulting water and mildue ,flooring ,walls damage. I personally was in some Condos back when they were built about 1974 and again in 90's searching for leak sources and discovered pipes like swiss cheese so bad the association had to change out copper pipes and put in all Cpvc in nearly a hundred units. Fluoridation increases this risk drasticly showed Maas 2007 Coplan 2007. Read the documents instead of trusting someone who only reads talking points devoid of current science. www.waterloowatch.com has both studies on the top of home page and a official government document showing fluoridation worthless and causes diseases like cancer. This several hundred page government document is from Canada in 1979 with much more data on osteosarcoma now. It is ugly to cut little kids arms and legs off to save their lives and 5 to 7 times more common in 2 New Jersey studies and Bassin Harvard study by 5 PHDs. Chester Douglas her boss hid this from the goverment for 4 years but got 1 million government money for study.

iaomt.org has a positon paper by people who understand toxins and medicine.

nteu280.org is the EPA union website with over 8 fluoride history and position papers from real scientists.

As of 29 Feb 2008 19 EPA unions asked congress to halt fluoridation with no response. Politics is boss not science in government agencies. Same for surgeon generals who must clear speaches to be politically correct not science.

The ADA is just a trade association with income increases the prime directive always. They fight to keep low cost care for poor kids from happening. Alaska and Lousiana are the worst cases and the ADA spent over a million bucks to keep kids from getting treatment in Alaska but still refuse to go in the bush themselves. Thank god they lost this battle as now kids get treatment and preventive care close to home. This is how most countries give good treatment to the poor when the US fails getting treatment to most poor. One public health dentist but 50,000 kids just does not work. only 8 of over 200 dentists even signed up to treat medicaid kids but most are booked taking no new patients. Poor people often have transportation problems so kids often get no care. That is another big ugly story. Fluoridation is the smoke and mirrors to hide the near total failure to most poor kids. It only damages them more as ingested fluorides have no documented mechanism of benefit. 20 current studies show this and the CDc admitted in 1999 and 2001 sort of. Show me the studies of ingested benefit at 1ppm--Not the topical at 1000ppm toothpaste. Bait and switch is not honest. 1ppm ingested has no documented mechanism of benefit-period. Stop the lies Mr Dentist. Put up or shut up, Please. Come to the Monday 7 pm meeting. I will try to make it.

It’s déjà vu all over again! Once again, dentists and taxpayer-paid officials swarm out to maintain or introduce mass medication of a very hazardous and toxic substance to your water supply. Whoever made the decision to stop fluoridation of the DeLand water supply made the right decision and saved money to boot. Orange City has saved close to a million dollars since the 1997 decision not to fluoridate the Orange City water supply when the issue came up in Orange City (using the figures quoted in the May 7-10 Beacon).

These dentists represent the same trade group that for 150 years has told the world that mercury in our mouths is good for us (even though it becomes a hazardous substance when removed). The world at large now knows that mercury is toxic in an ever more toxic environment and is to be avoided. The dental profession still hasn’t admitted the obvious.

Since the 1940’s dentists have told us that fluoridated water is good for us because of its effect in preventing and controlling tooth decay. That’s the dance of the one-trick pony. The human being is more than teeth. We do know that the abundant element fluoride is very low in mother’s milk. What happens when we upset the balance of nature and give infants 100 times as much fluoride in formula from our water supply? We simply don’t really know. What happens when an entire population is deliberately mass-medicated with a substance even more toxic than lead? Again, we don’t really know. In a chaotically contaminated chemical environment, it is difficult, if not currently impossible, to separate out the confounding factors in any of the studies for or against fluoride. We do know that fluoride is not a nutrient. We do know that dental caries are decreasing in countries that do not practice fluoridation. We do have reasonable suspicion that fluoride may be associated with increased incidence of cancer (e.g., osteosarcoma), premature aging, genetic changes, and nervous system problems including lowered IQ. We do know that life is tenacious and will adapt, persist, and respond to, and in spite of, noxious influences.

And we do know that fluoridation costs money, someone gets paid that money, and we get stuck with the bill. But Environmental Protection Agency employees (not management!) in a July 2, 1997 press release devoted to fluoride concluded “As professionals who are charged with assessing the safety of drinking water, we conclude that the health and welfare of the public is not served by the addition of this substance to the public water supply.” For those who in the back of their minds, think that fluoride, somehow, purifies water and makes it safer, let it be known that fluoride makes water less pure and less safe.

As a physician, I would not dream of indiscriminately administering such a drug without consideration of need and without consent. I would consider it malpractice. I have no serious quarrel with physicians and patients who, with informed consent, elect fluoride treatment. I do have a problem with taxpayers being forced to swallow their medicine whether or not they want it. For those who, somehow, still support fluoridation, do you really want to impose fluoride on others, knowing that today’s dogma is tomorrow’s myth? Authorities and their opinions come and go.

There is an alternative to fluoride for those who believe it’s helpful. It’s called toothpaste and it’s more than enough. But even swallowed fluoride toothpaste is harmful to young children. Read the label. Children, infants with lots of cavities? - stop the soda, sweets, and juices at every opportunity. May cut down on obesity, too. A two-for-one benefit.

Finally, I quote the Beacon: “They showed a horrifying photo of a young woman’s mouth full of caries and threatened that people can die from poor dental health. They said DeLand had showed leadership and was making dental-health progress, but was in danger of backsliding if fluoridation wasn’t restored.” That was a cheap trick and unworthy of their cause. I can imagine that at least some of the public health professionals there, still capable of thought, must have been inwardly cringing at such tactics.

In the end, money started this fluoridation misadventure in DeLand and money ended it. But it behooves us to be alert to that still, small voice that tells us, somehow, it’s not smart to poison our well.

I was just hoping the commission was smart enough to do the right thing as they bit hook line and sinker like suckers for a really poor pitch. The manager failed even the basic test of verification after he had a meeting with a dentist who made him understand how important fluoridation is. For dentists as least as it is the cover story to hide the very ugly fact just a tiny few dentists ever treat a single poor kid on medicaid. They are the problem instead of the solution and fluoridation is the smokescreen the ADA sells too smart to be stupid dentists. They blindly do talking points with no clue how so very wrong they are. Not one mentioned any negative cumulative toxin issues but then they are dentists and should not discuss out side the oral cavity as a dentist expert. I talked to a attorney who was interested in filing a letter of intent to litigate. I am sort of interested if anyone on the commission will wise up and do a redo. I am from Ormond Beach and now think litigation is needed to make foolish people smarten up. Could they really be that clueless. The dentists did not sound that bright to win them all over. What did. Something outside the commission chamber most likely. A very interesting letter from the Mayor of a tenn city hits the lying chumps at the health department square between the eyes as it is rare they actually answer a tough question. Lots of words but no answers ,Just talking points. Government at its worst with total disreguard for citizen health. Most have no clue topical is different then ingested with ingested worthless except for damage. I wnat the health department to see what is coming and they read this stuff to plan the lies.

Wow, that Jim sure is passionate in his anti-floride stance. Unfortunately, flooding the Beacon Web site with a record number of really long blogs (prob. most in paper's history, I'd guess) ultimately won't accomplish much, even if they are very thorough, intelligent and well-reasoned, like Jim's are. Really Jim, why not consider running for the city commission the next time an election rolls around? I really think you could win just running on an anti-flouride platform. I'm sure the majority of residents agree with you and it's not like they're wild about the incumbents, who really have pretty much turned out to be disappointments.

Please do not think I paint all dentists with a broad brush but I think over 80% of dentists get almost all the current science facts wrong on toxic effects and lack of ingested benefits. K.M. Yoder showed dentists tested out 17% Indiana and 14% Illinois understanding the basic science. What other profession publicly promotes mass medication with toxic waste with the science showing no measurable ingested benefit but over a dozen diseases caused of worsened by a choronic toxic overload. It is not even legal to medicate the water under the SDWA but that is ignored also. The ntew280.org (headquarters unioned filed lawsuit in 1986 to stop fluoridation as a total violation of SDWA but the federal courts refused to hear the 29 page Amicus Curiae brief. From 1985 President Bob Carton PHd of the Epa professionals union called this the largest fraud ever. Yes fluoridation has no basis in science they said and proved only to be ignored. 11 Epa unions asked congress to halt in 2005 and a goal of ZERO just like other cumulative chronic toxins arsenic and lead. On 29 Feb 2008 19 asked congress but still no response. The lobby with ADA money and industry polluters do very big things with money behind the scenes.

So please do not think every dentist thinks this way because many good professionals in many fields know the truth.. We just need to see more come out to speak to the public and the city commissions. It is not fun to be attacked and that often happens but it is just verbal. Sooner or later we need to stand up and be counted. Lets have open discussion and those dentists that spoke so loudly for fluoridation might grow wiser and actually read beyond some simplistic talking points. Let this be about real current science. Fluoridation has always been about Public relations and not science.

I am really looking foreward to listening and reading the transcripts of what the pro fluoride lobbyists said at the meeting. If any dentists made claims of safety for all and everyone benefits maybe we need to see what the board of professional regulation has to say. Dentists are unqualified by regulation to speak professionally of health diagnosis outside the oral cavity. This has been very clearly stated in California. Florida refused to respond when I asked except to give me a copy of the regulation and told me o figure it out myself if it wasw a violation of regulations. I believe they often cross over into violating regulation and puting people at risk by their actions.

March 10 the Health department held a secret sneaky meeting of pro fluoride groups like dentists and hygienists etc to plan a fluoridation promotion. Dr. Fred Costello had also asked them to discuss how to refuse what a local anti fluoridationist had been saying to cities and documenting with peer reviewed and government studies. About three years ago Mayor Dentist Costello had also made a Cd of 13 times of public comments to Ormond Beach City Commission by Jim Schultz. A transcript also was sent to many dentists and even cities like Daytona Beach to warn them so they could better resist and rebuf the data. I was not told this public record data was released to many. I only discovered by accident and was overjoyed as now in court those notified can not deny ever having been made aware of the points of fact and science. I Thanked by dentist mayor for doin g his part to educate dentists but never really thought that was the true intent.

The city of Ormond Beach instead did a rule of two to ban anyone from ever speaking on the same topic more then twice. Vice Mayor Ed Kelly had suggested this and said it made him cross to have to listen to me. Ed believes the public are better left of of the process and should not speak at meetings at only commissioners like himself are skilled enough to make good decisions. That is very contested by many. After 3 months with no admission of limiting free speach the rule was dropped.

The State of Florida in 1990 sent out a letter from Susan Allen who promotted fluoridation from Oral health department.. She clearly said to keep a low profile and never raise the issue to the public but only behind the scenes have trusted people (Dentists) lobby the commission and never have a vote unless you know you can win..Even wait until antifluoride commissioners leave office. The last thing to ever do was have a vot of the people because 3 of 4 votes went against fluoridation. This shows the tradition of out of the sunshine deceptive con game politics behind the citizens backs was the norm. Maybe still the goal if possible. It seems much easier to sway 5 votes then a whole community. We do not know what is done behind the scenes to win over votes. It sure has nothing to do about current science.

It is natural to want to trust people who should know the most. With fluoridation those that should know the most seem ignorant beyond my ability to even believe. Do they have blinders preventing them from knowing the huge amount of current peer reviewed science proving fluoridation worthless and far worse. I do not use the term stupid it is far worse then that. It is a total refusal of rational thought as a believe system is held so strongly they can not see the forest for the trees. It is rare that a dentist will even mention the CDC ADA warning for infants to not have formula with fluoridated water..The health department ,wic, healthy start and every formula maker refuses to put this know risk on the can. This dental fluorisis risk has been know from before fluoridation began and a goal of 10% damaged teeth of the very mildest was a goal for fluoridation to not be a failure. The very first Grand Rapids experment was called a total success at 5 years before andy adult teeth were exposed of children born into the experment. A total lack of adult tooth data is not the basis of a endorsement in the real world. The Health department said the case was closed and no additional safety studies need be done but actually none had been done. In 1962 hen the experment was completed 19.2% whites and 40.3% blacks had dental fluorisis. To this day the CDC documents blackshave double the moderate and severe dental fluorosis but still refuses to tell the public even after ethics charges in 2007. The CDC does not have a single toxicologist in the oral health fluoridation promotion team. Bernie Maydoff looks like a honest man next to them.

I asked Our wonderful health department for information on dental fluorisis but they said under state statute it is not a legal health effect so they kept no records. Thank you Could thse people be more worthless if they tried?

Citizens of Deland if you want the truth you must ask your commissioners and Mayor or Ciry manager some of the questions raised. Talk to Dr Tom Coleman (ole Mr sneaky) who likes to do thing out of the sunshine about current science. You have been sold down the river by some professionals that are not that professional when it comes to ingested fluoride knowledge. Ask some questions on talk radio, newspaper, your church or your neighbor. Ingested fluorides have a cumulative toxic effect over time far more then you could ever believe. Some in the medical professions are very aware but most are in denial and totally ignorant of the risks. They have ignored the obligation of due diligence- some with malace. Legal recorse will come against many in the near future. Lawsuits are starting and your city must protect all from the fallout. I hope this is a wake up call. For most I doubt it will be.

Strange so many readers seem to know the total fraud of fluoridation lore but dentists and health department totally ignore the long list of risks peer reviewed and government studies. They have failed the test of integerty by not even attempting to give information required for informed consent. Quite bluntly they ignored the current science showing huge flaws in the fluoridation theory. Over 20 researchers and the CDC in 1999 and 2001 admitted topical not ingested is the primary benefit. Most researchers show the ingested benefit is so small as to not be measurable--It never did exist. Fluoridealert.org shows all 20 plus studies.. Ask your dentist for a list of researchers showing the documented mechanism of ingested fluorides---It does not exist.

The York review 2000 in the UK looked at 3200 studies and not a single one was class a high quality bias unlikely. Every single one was bias in design with out properly controling variables to have any ability to prove anything. The variable of examiner variablility is greater then the effect they are trying to examine.. The early studies had huge pressure to make results fit the theory as the Atomic Energy Scientists needed to protect the Manhatten Bomb project..

All of the early research setting up this theory was done by polluting industries and scientists funded with industry dollars.. Alcola Aluminum founder was in charge of the US health department for 10 years when this groundwork was done. The lead attorney for Alcola Euwing strong armed the PR to win Doctors and Dentists over with funding rewards and brutal attacks if needed. Dentists mostly do not know this history of deception and fraud that brought us fluoridation.. They were madrassa like schooled to blindly accept fluorides as a blessing. They know a comic book version of the history and agressive share this very flawed non scientific theory.. The last thing they want to do is have a discussion of the current peer reviewed studies showing there is no such thing as optimal dose. Optimal dose is a total lie with even in 1979 Harold Hodge in 1979 admitting even 0.1ppm could have negative effects. The AWWA knew the same science until 1951 after the health departments started twisting arms and using cash to buy policy. None of the 100 plus endorsers of fluoridation acutally did studies of their own as it was just required to not be attacked and to get federal money. Dozens of groups have withdrawn endorement over the years as they discover the leagal risk..Some like the ADA are in to deep to turn honest quite yet. Any fool should have known decades ago it is about total dose of fluorides not the amount in the water only.

That total dose has shot up by multiples show the government studies thus dental fluosis has shot up but the CDC has not reported just how much. They cook the data and ignore the worst.

Augusta Ga in 1979 had 80% dental fluorisis with 14% moderate and severe with 1ppm fluoridation. This is criminal neglegence but typical of the deception you were treated to by the health department and dentists.

The biggest US study ever in 1986-7 of 40,000 kids showed 66.4% of children with evidence of fluoride toxicity by dental fluorosis. Fluoridation was to be a failure if the very mildest damage was over 10%.. Mission accomplished. Study by Heller.

The Deland city commison was deceived by people they trusted like a bunch of rubes. Maybe they are OK with that. Maybe they should be somewhat mad? Maybe they just want to put this behind them? You are not on the record having acceptedthe statements of health department and dental professional statements. You have a legal obligation to verify if you were told the whole correct story or just a fairy tale. The citizens of Deland deserve no less the a accounting of the current science. The FDA has never once approved or even review any ingested fluoride ever. H2SiF6 has never been even tested by any government agency with emperical data for benefit or safety. Release to the public from the b703-06 the specification sheet or even better from the last or current batch of chemical. Trust must be earned and transparency is required if you want to operate in the sunshine. The people of Deland deserve no less.

Maybe the paper could actually have a article that does more then a offhand mention of anti fluoridation science. 11 Epa Scuience unions asked congress to halt fluoridation in 2005 with no response yet. This opposition started in 1985 when outright fraud was discoved within the agency to protect fluoridation.

Promoters of water fluoridation are not being truthful when they claim that fluoridated water does not increase the incidence of cancer and other illness.

I quote the US Attorney at Law Janie Evins: "In the early 1990's, with trials of 11, 14 and 40 days to allow for extensive expert witness testimony, courts in Illinois, Texas and Pennsylvania each came to the same conclusion: fluoride at one part per million in the water, a) aggravates existing illnesses, b) causes adverse health effects, and c) contributes to a significant increase in cancer deaths."

Attorney Evins wrote this in a letter dated 19/02/09 that she sent to the Oral Health Director of the Arkansas Department of Health, Dr Lynn Mouden who had made false claims about fluoridation in order to promote the practice.

The letter is accessible via this link http://fluoridealert.org/arkansas.2-19-09.letter.pdf and would be an eye-opener for those who believe the lies about fluoridation's safety that are peddled by the government and other promoters of water fluoridation.

Fluoridation doesn't save money because it doesn't reduce tooth decay.

Fluoride is not stopping cavities and is causing discolored teeth, was reported in several studies presented at the American Association for Dental Research’s annual meeting, March 8 – 11, 2006, in Orlando, Florida.

For example:

-- Researchers following children from birth, starting in 1991- 1995 (Iowa Fluoride Study), found almost double the dental fluorosis in early erupting permanent teeth of 9 year-olds drinking optimally fluoridated water compared to children drinking sub-optimally fluoridated water (41% vs. 21%); but no less tooth decay.(1)

-- Researchers found no significant relationship between fluoride exposure and cavities in permanent teeth of 6 to 9-year-olds in Campeche, Mexico(2). Previously, it was reported that 56% of this group has dental fluorosis.(3)

-- A U.S. national study reports cavity prevalence increased by 15% in 2 to 5-year-olds, in surveys taken between 1988-1994 and 1999-2002,(4) despite 60 years of water fluoridation reaching 2/3 of Americans on public water supplies and virtually 100% via the food supply. However, the Centers for Disease Control report that 1/3 to 1/2 of U.S. schoolchildren display dental fluorosis.(4a)

-- Another U.S. study shows that breastfed children have less cavities than non-breastfed.(5) even though breast milk has 100 times less fluoride than dentists claim is optimal to reduce cavities. Breastfeeding is also protective against fluorosis.(5a)

-- Although New York City fluoridated in 1965, NYC children of Chinese descent suffer a much higher prevalence and severity of tooth decay than the national average (63% vs 38%). (6)

-- About half of 7 to14-year-old children from fluoridated Rochester, NY, have cavities. Latino children had significantly higher caries experience than African-American and Caucasian children, thus indicating that disparities exist among different ethnic groups even when the water is fluoridated.(7)

-- In fluoridated Detroit, 91% of African American low-income children, 5 years and younger, have tooth decay.(8)

There's more:

-- A study in the Fall 2008 Journal of Public Health Dentistry reveals that cavity-free teeth have little to do with fluoride intake. The authors write, "The benefits of fluoride are mostly topical…while fluorosis is clearly more dependent on fluoride intake." They further explain that, when fluoridation began in the 1940’s, “it was believed that fluoride needed to be ingested early in life to provide [cavity] prevention…Today, evidence suggests that…the benefits of fluoride are mostly topical.”

-- Researchers reporting in the Oct 6 2007 British Medical Journal (BMJ) indicate that fluoridation, touted as a safe

cavity preventive, never was proven safe or effective and may be unethical. Cavity rates declined equally in fluoridated and non-fluoridated European countries. "This trend has occurred regardless of the concentration of fluoride in water or the use of fluoridated salt is reported.

--Even when fluoridated water is the most consumed item, cavities are extensive when diets are poor, according to a 2007 Caries Research article. Burt and colleagues studied low-income African-American adults, 14-years-old and over, living in fluoridated Detroit, Michigan. Yet, 83%of this population has severe tooth decay and diets high in sugars and fats, and low in fruits and vegetables. "The most frequently reported food on a daily basis was tap water,"

write Burt's research team. Second were soft drinks and third were potato chips.

-- Tooth decay in fluoridated Detroit's toddlers' teeth is also shocking. Almost all of Detroit's five-year-olds have cavities; most of them go unfilled, according to Ismail et al (2006 IADR) "Severity of Dental Caries Among African American Children in Detroit"

-- After over 50 years of water fluoridation, many children in Newburgh, New York have more cavities and more fluoride-caused discolored teeth (dental fluorosis) than children in never-fluoridated Kingston, New York, according to a New York State Department of Health study published in the New York State Dental Journal("Recommendations for Fluoride Use in children" February 1998)

-- Despite a 73% fluoridation rate, severe tooth decay is responsible for two thirds of hospital visits by children under six in New York State . In New York City, fluoridated since 1965, more children required cavity-related hospitalizations, proportionately, than two of New York State's largest non-fluoridated counties, Suffolk and Nassau (Long island) whether payment was made by Medicaid or privately.(Early Childhood Caries-related Visits to Hospitals for Ambulatory Surgery in New York State," Kumar et al., Journal of Public Health Dentistry , Winter 2003)

This is how Jonathan Kozol explains life in the fluoridated South Bronx (a NYC borough) in his book, Savage Inequalities, “Bleeding gums, impacted teeth and rotting teeth are routine matters for children..... Children live for months with pain that grown-ups would find unendurable. …I have seen children with teeth that look like brownish, broken sticks. I have seen teenagers who were missing half their teeth....”

-- "It may...be that fluoridation of drinking water does not have a strong protective effect against early childhood caries (ECC)," reports dentist Howard Pollick, University of California, and colleagues, in the Winter 2003 Journal of Public Health Dentistry (Pollick is also fluoridation spokesperson for many groups including the American Dental Association)

-- Watch Pollick hesitatingly tell a legislator that infant formula should not be mixed with fluoridated water.

http://www.youtube.com/user/davidkennedydds

-- Despite living without fluoridated water, rural children's cavity rates equal those of urban children, who are more likely to drink fluoridated water, according to a large national government study of over 24,000 U.S. children, ages 2- to 17-year-old (Journal of Rural Health, Summer 2003, "Oral Health Status of

Children and Adolescents by Rural Residence, United States." by

Vargas et al.)

ten- to fifteen-year-olds' permanent teeth reveal unexpected results -

similar cavity rates whether they drink fluoridated water or not, reports Armfield and Spencer in the August 2004 "Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology"

Fluoride also causes hypothyroidism - I have the test results to prove it. Diagnosed in Dec 2007, I started drinking bottled water and then later installed a rain water tank with a carbon filter. Now that I avoid all fluoridated water and products containing fluoride my thyroid is functioning normally. It has been well documented that fluoride affects metabolism – the best thing is that I no longer have weight problems and do not suffer from fatigue any more. Furthermore, the debate whether fluoride is safe and effective is totally irrelevant. No one has the right to forcibly mass medicate people with a toxic industrial waste product with no controls over dose and without our consent.

Why is it, when a "business" is making less money or producing or selling fewer products, it gets rid of non essential employees and/or makes a smaller more cost efficient running facility and/or cuts out some of the business perks.

So, if the city is selling less water, logically it should need less employees, smaller more efficient facility and fewer perks to operate. Let's see, fewer employees, smaller offices, fewer city vehicles, no office coffee, no luncheons, no driving around to 7-11, Burger King, and other non essential water management duties. That might save a few dollars. If the city works at 100% (haha, sorry), then wouldn't a 20% drop in workload mean a 20% drop in workforce and equipment.

If this flouride program is so important, maybe the city commission and dentists can flip the bill for it since they are so gravely concerned for everyones health. Maybe some free dental checkups to boot because my friend has drank city water for the last 14 years with the flouride and has a cavity (oops, there goes the theory on flouride) and no dental insurance because his water bill and property taxes keep going up.

Maybe instead of flouride, the city can offer dental coverage to its residents.

You know, most Dr's believe a glass of red wine is very helpful for my health also. Can the city start leaving a case by my door every month?

If you want to see a very professional paper on cancer documented risks done in 1979 go to http://www.waterloowatch.com It has a full report done by MOE or minister of environment in Canada. It is hundreds of pages long. The evidence is much greater now with the many osteosarcoma cancer studies documenting 5 to 7 times more cancers for young boys with fluoridation by toxic waste h2SiF6. It has a large range of radioactive contaminates which often are much more toxic with other toxins combined. Florida has phosphate mines that were forced to install smokestack scrubbers by EPA to reduce cattle and crop death downwind.. This is the toxic sludge never tested for safety ever by any country for benefit or health effects. Industry was allowed to dump in our water supply as a favor to industry..Industry had done all the fluoridation data with their own money as a act of kindness to reduce the huge lawsuits for fluoride toxicity damage.. The AEC joined in to help protect industry and the Manhatten bomb project which required millions of pounds of purified fluorides to make bomb grade uranium. They faked fluoride safety and rewrote studies to stop lawsuits that could have risked our nuke project. Fluoridation was the plan to help industry stop lawsuits and it only required they fake data of benefit. Dentists and Doctors and water treatment all knew how stupid this was as fluoride was documented to damage teeth as low as .1ppm. The health agencies greased the skids of deception with lots of cash to those that accepted the deception and sold their soul to the devil. Most dentists have no clue of this evil history but it is well documented in huge secret document releases in 1996 with half the book The Fluoride Deception full of documents showing evil intent of deception with no concern for health or teeth. Chris Bryson did 10 years of research but the truth of fraud is ignored as fluoridation is about Public relations and ignorant professionals following talking points blindly. Very blindly ignoring who they damage. Trust less and research more. I have seen this pattern of dentists claiming total safety for all from unknown lifetime doses of cumulative toxins. This is insanity for anything except fluoride right which is only good at any dose. Any fool knows this is not true for even a peanut which can kill some in a tiny smear. Those low in calcium, magnesium, vitamin c or low iodine are at much higher risk and this is well documented many times. Kidney patients, health patients and seniors over 50 and low on protein intake are all on the 1993 and 2003 US tox profile warning hidden from the public and dentists. Dentists are not evil just ignorant of risks and willing to damage kids enamel for some strange reason not even admitting this to parents. Blacks are damaged double of whites and the CDC rerfused again in 2007 to answer ethics charges of hiding this documented unequal damage again and again. Truth is rare at the CDC and they do not even have a single toxicoligist working at oral health at it is more like the ADA fluoridation promotion fraud site.. Read what the EPA science unions say about the fraud and I believe them. www.nteu280.org Call Tom Coleman over at the health department and ask some tough questions. They are sneaky and like to do things out of the sunshine as lies die in the sunshine. Hold their feet to the fire. Never expect the truth as they only know policy. Transparency is not their style. Good government in Florida requires transparency. You must demand it or it will never happen.

Fluoridation has a sordid history of failure to improve children's teeth. Kentucky is the top state in the U.S. for the number of people on fluoridation, but is the worst state in terms of missing teeth and cavities. Dentists and newspapers in Boston, New York, and Detroit, which have long been fluoridated, all report a crisis in the number of cavities in children, particularly poor children. Even in Grand Rapids, the first city in the nation to fluoridate, dentists say it is not unusual to see children with 8 to 10 cavities. The truth is that it is the standard of living, which means a good diet, and proper dental hygiene that produces good teeth and not fluoride. Another awful truth is that research studies show that fluoride crossed the blood brain barrier and reduces IQ and increases bone cancer in children. It would seem governments are swayed by big money and big influence in ignoring the current research.

A research report in April confirms two other studies that children drinking fluoridated water have over 5 times the risk of bone cancer.

Think of the cost to those industries if they had to process that toxic waste instead of selling it to communities

There are many reasons to oppose fluoridation of water systems:

1. Government should not dictate that everyone must take a chemical against their will.

2. It is insanely inefficient with 99.5% of fluoridated water going down the drain, wasting 99.5% of the chemical cost. People only drink 0.5% of the water they use. A plan to give away fluoride free would be much cheaper.

3. It is not effective in reducing cavities. Most countries in Europe no longer fluoridate water systems. They are 98% fluoride free, yet the World Health Organization reports that nine of those countries have better cavity rates than the U.S. Many other research reports show the same ineffectiveness.

4. The toxic waste chemical, Hydrofluorosilicic Acid, is collected from the smokestacks of companies and sold to communities. It would be very expensive to process such waste, and it is illegal to dump it into our environment. So, over one million tons each year in the U.S. ends up in our environment anyway.

5. The most important reason to oppose fluoridation is the very severe health problems it causes, 50% builds up in the bones, brain, and glands. Please read the following article on bone cancer in young boys published in a prestigious scientific journal. How many deaths of young people should we accept so the big chemical companies and their cohorts can profit, selling us their poisonous toxic waste??

Another Study Links Fluoride to Bone Cancer

Apr. 29, 2009

NEW YORK, -- Blood fluoride levels were significantly higher in patients with osteosarcoma than in control groups, according to research published in Biological Trace Element Research (April 2009). Osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer, occurs mostly in children and young adults.

This reinforces a 2006 published Harvard study by Bassin showing a link between water fluoridation and osteosarcoma in young boys.(2)

and

A 1992 New Jersey Department of Health study shows osteosarcoma rates higher among young males in fluoridated vs. unfluoridated regions of New Jersey.(3)

H2SiF6 is a very corrosive destructive chemical to plant equipment and also pipes in homes also. It is excellent for leaching lead from brass and solder and even the new lead free brass can have up to 8% lead in it by law. Washington DC documented had the most lead contaminated water in the country for 4 years straight but did not tell the public for almost three years hiding documented lead levels hundreds and even thousands times over the limit of 15ppb. The home of fluoridation policy are the biggest screw up in the world but are the best at cover ups. They promote fluoridation policy under the accepted deception of the toxic effects hidden from the public.. So much government data show risk like the 1993 US toxic profile with a laundry list of people in unusually susceptable risk group. Everyone in the US is in or will be in the high risk group with most in several ..The EPA deceided to not tell the public after congress was promised in 2000 they would. They are so practiced at deception and so few know where to look for the truth. Your city is doing very little to see who they put at risk. Did anyone even mention babies are at much higher risk of forever damaged enamel in infant formula is made with fluoridated water as the CDC and ADA warned in hidden from the public warnings. Same for kidney and diabetic risks long documented but not admitted to those your city puts at risk..Maybe that is what lawsuits are for. Do your own research as your trusted professionals seem to ignore even the simple fact ingested fluorides are near worthless except to load a persons body with cumulative toxins over a lifetime. Policy does not permit study of this damage. Other countries like India have documented millions damaged and many at levels of fluoride we put in our water. Higher levels just damage faster and low levels slowly but just as surely over a lifetime. This is surely a time of shame of dental professionalism or lack thereof. Most are like robot parrots with ADA talking points give the comic book version of fraudlent theory. Will it take lawsuits to smarten people up? google fluoride dangers. The health department gets less right then the dentists. You must protect yourselves as they are worse then useless. Trust nothing they say unless you verify it.

The dental amalgam issue of putting mercury fillings in people is another ADA failure. Most dentists figured this out on there own and refuse to put toxic mercury in patients mouths. Maybe for fear of lawsuits, maybe for patient concern or maybe because they were at greatest risk from constant exposure and personal neurotoxic damage to their body. Mercury constantly leaks and off gasses every day at toxic levels putting all at risk. IAOMT.org documents this also and show off gassing and this is beyond foolish also. Cheap mercury fillings is mostly for only the poor now as most upscale dentists stopped decades ago but still do not speak up to the public against ADA policy.

sad the commission did not do their home work in this silly flip flop.. Fluoridation is one theory that gets nothing correct as it neither reduces cavities or is safe over time as a cumulative toxin.. Ingested fluorides do not reduce cavities and all the research shows no mechanism of cavity reduction by ingestion. Dentists are slow learners on the science and only 17% understood the new science when tested in Illinois. 14% in Indiana. Yoder K.M. 2007 is on pub med to show most dentists fluoride science ignor5ant but still very willing to tell the public what to do putting all at risk. Lawsuits are starting to put this tobacco ,asbestoes lead type science of false safety behind us. http://www.fluoride-class-action.com

http.//www.waterloowatch.com and http://www.fluoridealert.org

The FDA has never approved any ingested fluoridation chemical much less the H2SiF6 which comes directly from smokestack pollution scrubbers loaded with 20 plus toxic contaminates never mentioned to the public. No government agency in any country has ever even attempted to test this toxic sludge for safety or benefit. Ask to see AWWA b703-06 and the specification list of 20 plus contaminates.

19 EPA unions as of 29 Feb 2008 asked congress to halt fluoridation and a safety goal of ZERO just like other cumulative toxins arsenic and lead. This revolt at the EPA is in silence as newspapers never mention it but it started in 1985. They called fluoridation fraud with much documentation. Dentists are ignorant of all this but just smile and tell the old lies like good dentists should says the ADA trade association. Very very few dentists actually treat the poor kids on medicaid dental. Fluoridation is the smokescreen to hide this ugly fact..Fluoride toxicity is skyrocketing damaging enamel of many children causing a huge increase in very profitable cosmetic restorations. just blind luck fluoridation makes so many teeth ugly. Read the history of fluoridation fraud at the http://www.nteu280.org which is the scientists union of the EPA headquarters and 8 fluoridation papers.. http://www.iaomt.org show complete toxicology data by those qualified to discuss this very important health issue ignored by most less enlightened. flouride is a deadly chemical waste. There is an organization of dentists and helath professionals opposed to it. There are many people who filter their water just to make it safe to drink. I don't drink Deland water and I've noticed that bottled water is the norm in meetings held in Deland and the County Offices. Taste bad, filled with chemical waste and chlorine. Dentist's tend to the rich enough to afford their prices and really don't provide care for the public anyway.

Twelve-year-old Deamonte Driver lived in a fluoridated community but had severe toothaches and after being refused by about a dozen dentists who won't accept Medicaid patients, he was admitted to a hospital's emergency room when the infection spread to his brain. Two weeks and $250,000 couldn't save his life. He died from lack of dental care - not lack of fluoride. A simple filling could have saved his life if dentists didn't cater to only wealthier people

Fluoride is neither a nutrient nor essential for healthy teeth. Despite those misleading photos you were shown - consuming a fluoride-free diet does not cause tooth decay.

In fact, you can see similar horror photos of children who live in fluoridated communities such as Detroit, New York Ctiy, etc See http://www.FluorideNews.Blogspot.com

These fluoridationsts need to prove that people in Deland are fluoride deficient. Fluoride is in virtually all foods and beverages. The USDA created a fluoride in foods database so that parents can make sure their children don't get fluoride-overdosed. Did the fluoridationists tell you that infant formula should not be mixed with fluoridated water? Did they tell you that the National Kidney Foundation advises kidney patients to be told of the dangers of fluoride?

You have a moral obligation to inform your residents that some of them will be harmed by fluoride. No substance is completely safe for every human - but fluoride seems to be a the miracle drug where adverse effects slide off its back like oil in a Teflon pan - which by the way contains fluoride.

Fluoride is in a myriad of dental products - even some dental fillings and cements. Fluoride is in some drugs. It is inhaled via ocean mist and cold water humidifiers when fluoridated tap water is used.

Fluoride-containing pesticide residues remain on some produce and grains.

Sulfuryl Fluoride has replaced methyl bromide as a post-harvest fumigant - putting more fluoride into our environment and bodies

We know most Americans are dentist-deficient because 80% of dentists refuse Medicaid patients and 120 million Americans lack dental insurance. But none are fluoride-deficient and never were.

Dentists who promote fluoridation MUST be required to accept every patient who shows up at their door. That will show us how much they truly care about low-income people.

Even if fluoridation did reduce one cavity - not filling that one cavity leads to a dental crisis.

The people who showed up at this meeting truly believe what they are saying is true. Bill Osmunson a dentist for over 30 years used to think so until he actually studied the subject himself.

An internet radio interview with him is here (below the video):
