Friday night, the Deltona Lady Wolves were scheduled to face the Flagler Palm Coast Lady Bulldogs in the District 2-6A tournament championship game at Patricia Wilson Field on the Stetson University campus.
Wednesday evening, the Lady Wolves upset the DeLand Lady Bulldogs, 4-2, to end their season suddenly after cruising through the regular-season games undefeated. DeLand closed out at 16-6, while Deltona continued on with a 13-7 record.
Both Deltona and FPC will be advancing on the tournament trail, with the winner staying at home, and the loser being on the road.
Earlier in the tournament, Casey Jackman fired a no-hitter to oust the Pine Ridge Lady Panthers, while FPC took the measure of the Spruce Creek Lady Hawks, 10-2.
With Jackman back in the circle against DeLand, the Lady Bulldogs scored twice in the first inning, but were then blanked the rest of the way, suffering nine strikeouts.
Shellie Robinson had a key double in the first inning, and later singled. Christy Baranet, Olivia VanDeusen and Jenna Bray added singles.
Erica Gulik hurled well for DeLand, allowing only six hits, but three were bunched in the four-run third inning, with a walk, a fielder’s choice and an error. Aleimalee Lopez singled twice for the victors, and Brandi Jessell, Courtney Sherrill, Nicole Shinsky and Christie Encarnacion added one-baggers.
It was an outstanding game, with the Wolves repeating a victory over DeLand a year ago, but that one was in the district championship, with both teams advancing. This one hurt more, as it came in the semifinals, and leaves the Lady Bulldogs at home.
