Another “Battle of the Bulldogs” took place Tuesday night on Melching Field at Conrad Park, with a tough eighth inning turning the tide for visiting Flagler Palm Coast, for a 6-4 victory over DeLand.
Both teams scored twice in the first inning, then the visitors scored once in the second, and DeLand tied it at 3-3 in the third. Things stayed that way until the eighth, when FPC used a single, a sacrifice, a wild pitch and a squeeze bunt for a run. The game was iced when Jordan Taylor clouted a two-run homer over the right-field barrier.
DHS tried to rally in the bottom of the eighth, when Austin Jackson opened with a double and came around to score on a FPC error, but that was it.
Jackson earlier had singled, while Cameron Ward also doubled and singled in the loss. Brandon Turner, Doug Flowers and Andrew Wixson added one-baggers.
Luke Weaver opened on the mound for DHS, hurling three-and-a-third innings allowing four hits, walking four, hitting two and fanning three. Ryan Faer came on in relief in the fourth with one out, and held FPC at bay until the eighth. He was nicked for seven hits, while he whiffed two, with a walk and a hit batter. Blake Seibert picked up the final out of the game.
Friday, the two teams were scheduled to change fields, with DeLand heading to FPC. Tuesday, the DHS ’Dogs will be on the road to Pine Ridge to battle the Panthers at 7 p.m. The next home game will find Pine Ridge here at 7 p.m. on Melching Field at Conrad Park, with the ’Dogs following a 4 p.m. clash between the Bullpups and the Pine Ridge JVs.
