Food Lion No. 662 in DeLand will close March 28.
Karen Peterson, corporate communications manager at the chain’s home office in North Carolina, confirmed the news.
Talk of the closing has been circulating the past few days.
The store, at 1588 N. Woodland Blvd., is the only Food Lion in DeLand. Its 30 associates have been offered jobs at other Food Lion stores, Peterson said.
The nearest Food Lion is at 1382 Howland Blvd. in Deltona. Orange City’s Food Lion store closed in 2006.
Peterson wouldn’t comment on whether a rent increase was a factor in deciding to close the DeLand store.
“What we share is that we periodically look at and evaluate local stores and their performance. There are a lot of factors,” she said.
The lease expires in April, Peterson did say.
According to a story by Mark Wineka in the Salisbury Post in Salisbury, N.C., Food Lion announced an immediate layoff of 80 corporate employees in the Salisbury area Jan. 22. The economic times and the need to streamline operations were cited.
The story stated the Food Lion corporation employs more than 73,000 people in 11 states.
