Lake Helen's first annual Christmas Parade is getting ready to roll on Sunday, Dec. 7.

Lineup for the parade will begin at 3:30 p.m. at Wachovia Bank at 520 W. Main St. The parade will start at 4 p.m., then proceed to Blake Park at 493 S. Lakeview Drive, where Santa will greet the children and the Christmas tree will be lighted at 6 p.m.

At the Nov. 20 meeting, Parks and Recreation board member Betty O'Laughlin told City Commissioners, "We're excited about the Christmas parade and the tree-lighting."

It will be an old-fashioned parade.

Children of Volusia Pines Elementary School in Lake Helen are particular targets for participation in the parade. Look for some music.

Children can decorate their bicycles and ride them in the parade. Locals can decorate their golf carts and other vehicles for the parade, too.

O'Laughlin said that's what the organizers want, "a strictly hometown parade," with the emphasis on public participation.

The parade will culminate with a tree-lighting ceremony at Blake Park, where a fire truck will deliver Santa Claus.

The Lake Helen Crafty Ladies crafts group will be on hand with popcorn, cider and other items, O'Laughlin said.
