Mayor George Coleman called members of the DeBary Garden Club to the dais at a November City Council meeting.
On behalf of the city, he presented representatives Christy Jefferson, Pat Pandeline and Mac McShea with a certificate of appreciation for the DeBary Garden Club's contributions to DeBary.
He cited the club's leadership in encouraging civic beauty and conservation of natural resources.
In 1954, a group of 28 women formed a group to beautify DeBary. They called themselves "The Pioneers."
The next year, The Pioneers formed the DeBary Garden Club.
The club was instrumental in getting DeBary declared a bird sanctuary in 1959. Members are engaged in two long-standing projects: taking presents of fresh flowers to residents of DeBary Manor Nursing Home and, in 2005, they planted the Butterfly Garden in DeBary's Gateway Park.
