Another 100 local veterans of World War II will be flown to Washington, D.C., Saturday, Sept. 27, on the second Honor Air flight from this area. While in the nation's capital, the group will visit the National World War II Memorial and other places of interest.
The three Rotary Clubs based in DeLand are coordinating the trip, as they did with the May 17 flight, and are accepting no money from the veterans. Honor Air is designed to allow a grateful community to thank to servicemen and servicewomen who sacrificed so much for America's freedom.
Members of the public who would like to contribute to this effort can call Bill Mancinik, one of the coordinators, at (386) 738-5500, or visit the organization's Web site.
In addition to cash donations to make the trip free for veterans, the Rotary Clubs are seeking guardians to travel with the group. These are volunteers who look after three veterans each, and assure the flight and tour of the nation's capital are comfortable and safe for them. Guardians pay their own way, at $400 each.
