Commuter rail is not costly. I saves money. Federal law provides 80 % for mass transit projects but G.W. Bush allowed only 50 %. Florida can get 80% federal funds. Local money can come from bonds that can be paid off from the savings, NO NEW TAXES. There is no crime problem. Fairfax County VA has both commuter rail and rail rapid transit and the lowest crime rate of any large county. Tri-Rail from Miami to West Palm Beach moves people for 40 cents per passenger-mile. Buses cost double that. Autos cost 66 cents per mile. The savings are real. Commuter rail will also cut fatalities on the high way and reduce new highway construction costs.
