Disclosure-I am one of the lawyers representing John Tanner in this grand jury mess. This is an excellent and accurate review of the issues. Newspapers that protest the court's sealing of this presentment should instead be concerned with the star chamber proceedings from which it emanated. We defend open government because it is essential to the integrity of the decision-making process. So what about the product of secrecy? In the name of open government, we should not demand that the product of a closed proceeding be unsealed. It is morally and legally inconsistent.
